Understanding Family Doctors

In Canada, having a family doctor is particularly important when accessing the public health system. Family doctors are a key contact point for primary health care. They provide personalized medical support according to your medical history, your family background, and your specific needs. This is crucial for early detection of health problems, but also for rapid and coordinated referrals to specialists or to access more complex services when needed.

How To Request a Family Doctor

In this section, you will find the information and links needed in each province and territory to request a family doctor. (Please note that family doctors are not available in Nunavut.)

Wait times to be matched to a family doctor may sometimes stretch beyond three years. In the meantime, you can refer to the following information about walk-in clinics and community care clinics.

National

  2. Search by location:
    • Enter your address, postal code, or the city where you live.
    • Click on "Find" to launch the search.

  4. Check for availability:

    • Note that availability may be limited according to your location.
  5. Contact the clinic:
    • Once you identify a clinic or professional, contact them directly to confirm their availability and make an appointment.
